Het World Rally Championship begint aan een nieuw tijdperk in 2011. De oude WRC bolides zijn te snel, te geavanceerd en te duur geworden. Ford en Citroën waren de enige overgebleven fabrikanten, en dat was dan ook te weinig.

In 2011 zal er gereden worden met kleinere auto's, met minder vermogen. Van de 2.0 liter motor met turbo is het nu een 1.6 liter motor geworden. Mini keert terug naar de rallysport. Zij zullen de Countryman gebruiken, en hebben 2 ervaren rijders weten te strikken: Dani Sordo en Kris Meeke. Kris Meeke heeft de IRC titel in 2009 gewonnen, en Sordo komt over van Citroën. Mini zal dit jaar als een testjaar beschouwen, en zal niet aan elke rally deelnemen.

Bij Ford zullen we de Focus niet meer terug zien. Deze bolide is ondertussen een legende in de rallysport, met 44 overwinningen op zijn naam. Volgend jaar rijdt Ford met de Fiesta, deze is in 2010 grondig getest en goed bevonden. Ford denkt voor de titel te kunnen gaan met Hirvonen en Latvala. Van Hirvonen werd in 2010 veel verwacht, maar het was Latvala die zich ontpopte als kopman. Het zal interessant worden of Hirvonen de koppositie in 2011 kan terugveroveren.

Dan hebben we als laatste fabrieksteam nog Citroën met de levende legende Sébastien Loeb. De man is 7 maal op rij wereldkampioen geworden, en hij is dan ook de huizenhoge favoriet voor de titel. Dani Sordo is vervangen door een andere Sébastien, in dit geval Sébastien Ogier. Hij had zijn doorbraak in 2010, in zijn 1e volledige WRC seizoen. Van hem wordt veel verwacht in 2011.
Ook bij Citroën heeft men een nieuwe auto ontworpen: de Citroën DS3. Deze auto heeft de lastige taak om in de voetsporen van moeder C4 en grootmoeder Xsara te treden. Een niet geringe opgave.

Privateers
In 2011 zullen er ook privateers aan de start staan, en dat zijn er stukken meer dan in 2010. De kosten zijn stukken lager, en dat is te merken aan het aantal inschrijvingen voor de rally's van 2011.
Petter Solberg werd gelinkt aan het WTCC, maar heeft zich uiteindelijk met een Citroën DS3 ingeschreven. Voor Zweden nog als een privé team, misschien later dit seizoen met echt fabrieksmateriaal. Kimi Raikkonen komt ook dit seizoen aan de start, en zal ook dit jaar fabriekssteun hebben. Het Citroën Junior team is omgedoopt naar Ice 1 Racing.

Ook is er dit jaar een Nederlands tintje aan het WRC. Dennis Kuipers heeft de beschikking over een Ford Fiesta, en Peter van Merkestijn jr. krijgt een Citroën DS3 met fabriekssteun.

Andere grote veranderingen:
- Rijders hebben geen flipper meer op hun stuur zitten om mee te schakelen, maar hebben een sequentiële pook waarmee ze moeten schakelen.
- Er komen zogenaamde TV proeven. Dit is de laatste proef van de dag, en deze wordt live uitgezonden. De snelste krijgt 3 punten, de tweede 2 punten en de derde man krijgt 1 punt.
- Pirelli is uit het WRC gestapt om zich op de F1 te kunnen richten, Michelin en het Chinese DMACK leveren de banden voor het komende seizoen.

De Intercontinental Rally Challenge (IRC) is in het leven geroepen om jonge rijders een kans te geven in goed georganiseerde rallies mee te kunnen doen. Het concept is bedacht door Eurosport, en zij zenden deze serie dan ook uit.

Qua uiterlijk zijn IRC bolides vrijwel gelijk aan de WRC wagens, het grootste verschil zit echter onder de motorkap. De WRC bolides hebben een 1.6 liter met turbo, de IRC wagens hebben een 2.0 liter motor zonder turbo.

Vorig seizoen won Juho Hänninen in zijn Skoda het kampioenschap. Skoda treedt dit seizoen met maarliefst 5 auto’s aan, en ze lijken vastbesloten hun titel te behouden.
Peugeot lijkt de grootste uitdager te gaan worden met coureurs als Guy Wilks en Tony Gardemeister. Skoda heeft 5 coureurs ingeschreven, Peugeot gaat daar nog eens overheen met maarliefst 8 inschrijvingen. Petter Solberg komt daar nog eens bij voor de seizoensopener in Monte-Carlo.

Ook Ford mag niet worden uitgevlakt. Zij zetten ook in dit kampioenschap de Fiesta in, en hebben als coureurs Henning Solberg en Julien Maurin gecontracteerd. De Fiesta heeft vorig seizoen rallies gewonnen in het IRC, en Ford kan dus als een outsider voor de titel worden gezien.
Dan hebben we ook nog Proton en Ralliart. Beide auto’s zijn degelijk, maar niet super snel. Teams met deze bolides zullen vooral voor de punten meedoen.

en 18 februari is er een testdag voor equipes op CPZ, toegang is gratis dus kost je alleen parkeergeld als je met de auto komt.

Uitleg rally versus rallysprint:
Rally is een enement met voorgeschreven gemiddelde snelheid wat in het geheel of gedeeltelijk plaatsvindt op wegen die open staan voor het normale verkeer. Dit evenement kan uit meerdere dagen bestaan, maximaal 3.
Rallysprint, tegenwoordig ook short rally genoemd, is een 1 daags evenement die een beperkt aantal klassementsproef kilometers kent.|
Nog steeds niet erg duidelijk, maar een rallysprint kent meestal 6 tot 8 proeven op 1 dag ,en een rally kan 12 tot 18 proeven hebben vaak verdeeld over 2 dagen.

Niemand die de Monte volgt? Heb gisteren de live stages gekeken en het was best spannend. Loix doet het goed op P2, en Solberg staat mooi derde. Maar Hanninen inhalen gaat moeilijk worden. Alles lag droog, maar voor de laatste dag voorspellen ze nog wel sneeuw. Dus het kan best een onvoorspelbare finish worden morgen.

En verder heeft een zekere Boetti zijn been gebroken in een ongeval op stage 4, die daardoor geneutraliseerd werd.

Dat waren 2 geweldige stages :thumbup: Begon droog maar op het einde van SS7 was het volop aan het sneeuwen, Delecour als enige met de juiste banden.

Bouffier had wel alle mazzel van de wereld toen hij spinde, de bergrand raakte en verder kon!!! Erg gave proeven trouwens :D Solberg, Kopecky en Hanninnen op intermediates :P en ook nog iemand die volgens mij nog niet buiten was geweest en op slicks startte :P.

Delecour goed bezig op zijn spikes :D, wel leuk dat er voorin zoveel man op verschillende banden reden.

Voor de mensen die de proeven niet hebben gezien:

SS7 begon met schone natte weg, terwijl het sneeuwde, en de proef ging heuvelop, hoe hoger hoe meer sneeuw. In het begin van de proef waren de intermediates het snelst, op het eind eigenlijk de spikes waar alleen delecour op reed. Echter bouffier was op zijn sneeuwbanden nog sneller!

Beetje voorbarig; je weet niet wat er voor de 1e rally nog aan stickers bij komt. Er ontbreken nog een hoop standaard stickers, zoals die van de banden, rijders en technische partners dus je kan er van uit gaan dat hij gewoon nog niet af is.

Hmm ben ik dan de enige die de livery wel mooi vind? Is eens wat anders dan dat er 4 citroens met Red Bull reclame rondrijden.

Over 2 weken is de Circuit-Short-Rally op Circuit Park Zandvoort? Zijn er nog mensen die heen gaan? De proeven liggen mooi dicht bij elkaar.

Inschrijvingen zijn tot nu toe 17 equipes, maar ik weet niet wanneer die lijst voor het laatst is geupdated. Stiekem hoop ik nog een een paar last minute inschrijvingen van de mannen van Wevers Autosport, van Eldik, zodat er wat WRC's op het menu staan. Maar mocht dat niet gebeuren, dan ben ik er toch :P ;)

Co-driver hails Raikkonen's progress

Kimi Raikkonen has made massive progress as he returns to a World Rally Championship event for the first time in a World Rally Car, according to his co-driver Kaj Lindtsrom.

Raikkonen finished last year's Rally Sweden in 29th position after going off the road early in the event. At the mid-point on the opening day today, the former Formula 1 champion is 10th and ahead of factory Ford driver Khalid al Qassimi.

"We had one spin this morning, but otherwise this morning was good," said Lindstrom. "We have done almost a full season since last time we were here, so, of course there has been a lot of progress - it's good. We only had one day of testing, but we're getting there."

Lindstrom admitted that, like the rest of the field, Raikkonen had found the lack of grip on offer from the Michelin tyres tough to handle.

"This tyre is new," said the Finn. "It works on the icy surface but it doesn't work as well as last year's [Pirelli] tyre did in the loose snow.

"It's difficult for everybody. This afternoon we are looking for a clean run without even one spin."

Jammer dat de powerstage niet werd uitgezonden. Hirvonen heeft gewonnen in Zweden. Loeb kwam niet verder dan p6. Hirvonen zal in Mexico dus heel veel stof moeten gaan wegvegen.

Patterson, from Northern Ireland, was handed the keys to Solberg’s Citroen DS3 WRC after the Norwegian was prevented from driving.

Solberg was caught speeding on a public highway on Friday afternoon and was given 48 hours before he could no longer drive. The restriction also extended to the rally’s final stage.

“I knew at the regroup before the final stage that I would have to drive the last stage,” said the 42-year-old Patterson. “I’d never driven the car before but we had good laughter the whole way through. Road safety is very important and we have to abide by the rules. Petter was unfortunately speeding and paid the price.”

Patterson’s efforts ensured he and Solberg completed the final stage of the rally in fifth overall in their Petter Solberg World Rally Team-run car.

Loeb heeft de rally van Mexico gewonnen. Hij en Ogier zaten 2 dagen lang elkaar op te jagen, Ogier had een kleine voorsprong op de laatste dag maar knalde tegen een muurtje aan.
Hirvonen 2e, en behoudt zo de leiding in het kampioenschap. Hij heeft 9 puntjes voorsprong op Loeb, en dat zal Loeb niet zo erg vinden. De komende rallies zijn op gravel, en dus mag Hirvonen het pad gaan schoonvegen voor de personen achter hem.:)

Komend weekend is de Tank S rally weer in Emmeloord. Zaterdags ga ik sowieso kijken, en misschien vrijdag avond ook wel ff.

Staan vette wagens op de startlijst waaronder een 2x Lancer WRC 2005 en 2002, Impreza S12, 2x Impreza S14, Fabia WRC. Een legertje aan Evo's met af en toe een verdwaalde Impreza, en de gave Audi S2 quatro van Gerben Brouwer.

Ik was toevallig afgelopen weekend in Emmeloord om wat voor de Zundapp op te halen en toen zag ik al twee rally auto's achterop een truck staan. Achteraf blijkt dus dat er ergens in de buurt een rally was. Mooie foto's! :)

Ik moest toevallig die avond weg, dus niet kunnen zien, maar er rijden de hele week wel erg leuke wagentjes hier rond ;)
's Middags rond een uur of 4 over de N50 kom je ook alleen maar rally auto's tegen..
Tegen 11 uur weer terug, maar ze hebben wel heel vervelende verlichting als je ze tegemoet rijd in het donker... En dan hadden ze hun ver stralers nog uit...

Van Merksteijn Motorsport has marked the start of his 10-event World Rally Championship campaign in Portugal this week by confirming its support of the KiKa children's cancer charity in The Netherlands.

Team driver Peter van Merksteijn Jr will carry Drive for KiKa branding on his Citroen DS3 WRC throughout the course of the season. The Dutch squad will make a financial contribution to the charity for each stage kilometre covered. It will also approach its sponsors and partners for additional pledges of monetary support.

A statement from team said: “Peter van Merksteijn Jr is of the opinion that the enormous chance he is given to drive with a top car in the most prestigious global rally championship should also be used for a public cause. With millions of rally fans worldwide, he is dedicated to raise more awareness for a serious problem in the world, childhood cancer. Van Merksteijn Motorsport has linked the World Rally Championship project with KiKa, a Dutch foundation raising money for research on children with cancer who are fighting this horrible disease.”

Throughout 2011, Van Merksteijn Motorsport will raise awareness of KiKa and will set aside funds to support one of KiKa’s 80 research projects. At the end of the season van Merksteijn Jr will hand over a cheque to the charity.

Of van Merksteijn Jr’s first competitive outing of the season, Citroen Racing Technologies chief Benoit Nogier said the Dutchman’s objective was to complete the entire rally route in order to build his experience.

“The goal is to discover the team and the car,” said Nogier. “To do that he needs to stay on the road for all three days and to learn but I don’t need to tell him this because he already knows. He doesn’t need to think about where he finishes. He just has to finish.”

smerige tactiek van Hirvonen zeg. Hij had een lekke band op stage 9, en hij gaat weer rijden net voordat Loeb er aankomt. Hirvonen doet het rustig aan op de proef, Loeb kan er niet voorbij en verlies 30 seconden.

Beetje aanstelleritis heren. Loeb is pissig omdat hij in Hirvonen's stof moest rijden. Hirvonen was voor hem gestart, reed lek, heeft band verwisseld en is doorgegaan. Hij heeft niet expres langer gewacht om vlak voor Loeb uit te komen of wat dan ook, hij heeft gewoon zijn band verwisseld en is doorgegaan. Loeb loopt nu huilie huilie te doen dat Hirvonen hem niet voorbij liet en dat hij in zijn stof moest rijden, maar nogmaals; in de topsport moet je je gewoon zo gedragen en moet je geen cadeautjes weggeven aan je grootste concurrenten. Als Hirvonen hem er voorbij had gelaten waardoor hij bijv. aan het eind van het seizoen op 1 puntje achter Loeb zou komen te staan was iedereen daar weer over gevallen.

Als je het dan toch over onsportief moet hebben, kijk dan naar een gefrustreerde Loeb die z'n verlies niet kan nemen en dan maar tikken uit gaat delen ;)

Rally Jordan's first day cancelled

Tomorrow's opening day of the Jordan Rally has been cancelled following further delays in the arrival of the boat containing the kit required to run the fourth round of the World Rally Championship.

While official confirmation has not yet been received, AUTOSPORT's sources in a meeting between the teams and the FIA has confirmed that there will be no stages tomorrow.

The boat arrived in Israeli waters last night, but was forced to sit a kilometre offshore due to a heavy storm in the area, which would have made it unsafe for the boat to dock. The boat eventually docked two hours ago. The vessel has been unloaded and is now starting the customs process in Haifa.

The kit is not expected to arrive at the Dead Sea service park until late afternoon or early evening, leaving just 12 hours before the service park was scheduled to be used for the first control of the event - tomorrow morning's 07:00 departure for the Jerash ceremonial start.

It is now expected tomorrow will include shakedown and a rescheduled ceremonial start. Precise details and a revised timetable are expected from the next meeting between the teams and FIA in Jordan, which is set for 1900 local time this evening.

Ogier lijkt op weg om ook de rally van Jordanië te winnen. 30 seconden voor met nog 1 dag te gaan. Loeb, Latvala en Solberg strijden voor plek 2. Hirvonen, Raikkonen en Wilson gaan een flinke strijd leveren voor plek 5.

Volkswagen confirms WRC move

Volkswagen has ended months of speculation by confirming its participation in the World Rally Championship at a press conference in Sardinia this afternoon.
As expected, Volkswagen will base its first ever World Rally Car on the Polo, with the car competing for the first time in 2013. The car was revealed at a packed harbourside launch in Olbia.

Dr. Ulrich Hackenberg (member of the board of management of Volkswagen brand) said: "In the past, we celebrated our sporting success in the desert, in 2009 first manufacturer to win [Dakar]with diesel engine.

"But to the future, we have invited you to entry into the World Rally Championship in 2013. The Polo WRC will compete for the first time in 2013 and we look forward to competing again WRC competitors Citroen, Mini and Ford."
There was no news on drivers at the launch.

Hackenberg continued: "There is almost 20 months between now and our first competition and we will find the drivers who can be in contention for first place.
"Now we must prepare for the task ahead. There is a lot to be done. We look forward to racing on four continents."

Maar mooi dat er weer een fabrikant bijkomt in het WRC. Mooi studiemodel ook trouwens, vind het wel mooi die kleine modellen, Fiesta, DS3, Mini en Polo. Kleine bommetjes :D

Nee ik snap wat je bedoelt, in Le Mans heb je een aantal plaatsen waar je maar een halve meter (met hek ertussen :rolleyes:) achter de fotografen staat. Maar in de 3 jaar dat ik er nu geweest ben heb ik een hoop fotografen gezien die ook gewoon rekening houden met de mensen aan de andere kant van het hek. Terwijl zij daar toch staan om hun boterham te verdienen ;)
Verschil is misschien wel dat jij wat verder weg lijkt te staan en ze het misschien niet eens door hebben gehad dat er mensen achter hun ook foto's willen maken.

Monte Carlo rejoins WRC schedule

The Monte Carlo Rally will return to the World Rally Championship calendar in 2012, the FIA has announced.

This week's AUTOSPORT magazine revealed that a deal was in place for the Monte to act as season opener for both the WRC and Intercontinental Rally Challenge next year, and the governing body confirmed its return to the WRC schedule at today's World Motor Sport Council meeting.

The world famous Monte parted company with the WRC after 2008, and has since run as an IRC round.

But there was a surprise at the other end of the 2012 WRC calendar, with the anticipated debut of an Abu Dhabi round put off for at least a year.

"Abu Dhabi, previously published on the calendar subject to approval of the Event Business Plan, has been removed from the 2012 calendar," said an FIA statement.

"The organiser is invited to submit a proposal to run a candidate event for possible future inclusion in the series."

The previous 12-round provisional 2012 schedule has still been increased to 13 events, due to both the addition of Monte Carlo and a potential reintroduction of an Italian round, which has been listed as an extra rally with a date to be advised.

In another change agreed by the WMSC, the pre-rally shakedown will now act as a 'qualifying' stage on gravel events, with the quickest drivers allowed to pick their position in the leg one running order. This will end the situation of the championship leader being disadvantaged by running first on potentially dusty roads on day one of rallies.

The practice of cars running in rally order on days two and three will also be changed, with a return to the previous system of the leading cars starting legs two and three in reverse order.

"From 1 January 2012 the shakedown will be used as a qualifying stage for all Priority 1 and 2 drivers to determine the start order for each individual gravel rally," said the statement.

"Taking into account the shakedown times, P1 and P2 crews - in order of fastest to slowest - will be permitted to select their start positions.

"Subsequent days, all Priority 1 and 2 crews will restart in reverse order. The start position of all remaining crews will be determined according to the current regulations."

Ik heb vanochtend een stuk op MotorsTV zitten te kijken. In principe kwam het er op neer dat Citroën zo ver voor stond op de rest dat men rustig aan kon doen. Ogier was minimaal net zo snel als Loeb maar mocht niet aanvallen van Citroën, hij was daar nogal pissed over. Op het einde van de 2e dag kreeg Loeb een lekker band en kwam Ogier toch als 1e te staan.

Ik volg je logica, maar Loeb is niet voor niets ongeslagen op asfalt vanaf 2004. Als Ogier zo dichtbij bleef moest Loeb het wel onwijs rustig aan hebben gedaan.
Ogier is nooit super sterk geweest op asfalt, wel op gravel. Zou me enorm verbazen als Loeb zonder lekke band ook 2e was geworden. Ben dan ook benieuwd naar Frankrijk en Spanje, als Ogier het tempo niet bij kan houden heb je denk het antwoord op deze vraag wel.

Zelf Sordo, die een asfaltspecialist was, kon Loeb niet bijhouden op asfalt, en die zet die Mini wel op het podium neer.

Kimi Raikkonen excluded from World Rally Championship standings for skipping Australia

Kimi Raikkonen has been excluded from the classification of the World Rally Championship for not contesting this week's Rally Australia.

The former Formula 1 world champion elected not to travel to Coffs Harbour for the 10th round of the WRC and, once the event got underway last night, the stewards of the meeting made their decision - which will cost Raikkonen €16,200 (£14,000).

The officials' statement said: "Having considered the provisions of the 2011 FIA World Rally Championship Sporting Regulations and specifically article 7.3.8, the stewards decide to require the team Ice 1 Racing to pay the entry fee to the organisers of the 2011 Rally Australia, to pay the FIA a fine equal to the amount of the registration fee being €16,000 to exclude Ice1 Racing from the classification of the championship."

Raikkonen's Ice 1 Racing team is classified as a WRC Team and, as such, is bound to compete in the rallies nominated at the start of the season. Raikkonen had to nominate seven events, two of which had to be outside of Europe. He competed in Jordan earlier this year, but failing to make the start in Australia contravened the regulations.

The Finn had already contested six WRC rounds this season and was holding eighth place with 34 points. Raikkonen will be permitted to enter any of the remaining three rallies he wants to, but he will not be included in the end of season classification.

In Raikkonen's absence, the stewards' decision was accepted by team manager Benoit Nogier.

Black widow? Hunstman? Funnel-web? Or maybe, possibly, just a common Tegenaria domestica. I wasn't sure.

And I wasn't about to take any chances with the saucer-sized spider, which had checked into the same hotel room as me. I legged it.

Last week the World Rally Championship returned to Australia. And there were parts of it I hadn't missed at all.

Almost to a man (and woman), the WRC seems to bring out the Steve Irwin in everybody.

While I was keen to talk about the state of the New South Wales stages and how much like New Zealand they were, all anybody else seemed interested in was the story about Subaru co-ordinator George Donaldson, who had been poking a brown snake with a stick.

Whether it's the wildlife, the mesmeric scenery that comes when the Great Dividing Range bumps into the Pacific Ocean, or those roads, I don't know. But, on its return to the WRC after a year out, Rally Australia worked.

This time it had moved south in New South Wales - away from the gum tree-hugging-home of Kyogle's environmental set - and arrived in Coffs Harbour.

Rallying doesn't have a particularly lengthy history in Australia, but the history it does have is largely based on the Southern Cross Rally, which ran down the Coffs Coast.

With that in mind, you have to ask what on earth we were doing running the green gauntlet in the first place in 2009.

As much as the event was roundly scorned two years ago, it was immediately cherished in Coffs.

From the Ford Focus RS WRC sitting on the runway at Coffs airport to the slightly mad old girl selling cakes in her front garden wearing a faded Martini T-shirt on the road through Ulong, Coffs Harbour just got Rally Australia.

And Rally Australia got a home which, in time, could rival its super-successful 17-year history on the other side of the country in Perth.

While Rally Australia made its own luck on the commercial side, Citroen's two DS3 WRCs bouncing through the trees turned the event on its head and rewired the championship for the remaining three rallies.

For rally winner Mikko Hirvonen, taking 25 points down under was the easy part. He's still 15 adrift of championship leader Sebastien Loeb and the really hard work starts now for the Finn.

Flashes of inspiration and pace from the Ford team were evident on Rally Deutschland, the season's first asphalt round last month, but the Hirvonen Fiesta RS WRC is going to have to be on song more than ever before if he's going to carry the fight to Loeb in the Frenchman's backyard in a couple of weeks.

Can he do it? In theory, of course he can. In practice, it's unlikely.

In Australia, Loeb was quick to talk up Hirvonen's return to the fight. That's firstly because of his unassuming and decent nature.

Secondly, because Hirvonen is a potential title contender, and thirdly because he knew it would help to rally the Citroen team behind him.

The French firm is now faced with an interloper in what was shaping up to be an all-Sebastien scrap through to the end of the season.

But if Sebastien Ogier had listened carefully when the bonnet of his car hit a tree last Friday, he'd have heard another noise; The noise of his title tilt being flushed down the toilet.

It would have been naive in the extreme to think, post-Germany and the pro-Loeb team orders, that Citroen would have allowed them to fight for the rest of the year.

This theory was hammered home when team manager Sven Smeets told Ogier of the plan to find Loeb a point from what had looked like a potentially pointless Australia in the wake of the champion's inverted day one departure.

The plan was a simple one: the second DS3 WRC would pull over not far into the penultimate stage and wait for 10 minutes.

Ten minutes.

That's how much time Ogier had to drop to let Loeb past.

You wonder what Ogier did to pass the time. Maybe he took a page from his co-driver Julien Ingrassia's pacenote book to draw up his Christmas card list. Only to scratch a few names off…

Is Malcolm Wilson's name at the top of the list? Quite possibly. Could Ogier really jump ship? Absolutely.

There are a couple of stumbling blocks to a possible deal. The first is that Ford has yet to commit beyond this season (although this is increasingly seen as a matter of when rather than if); and secondly, can Ford afford Ogier?

The answer to the latter is undoubtedly no, at his current rate.

But, if he wants out of Citroen and into the only car capable of matching his current motor, then surely he'd be prepared to take a hit for a season to cast aside the shackles and take a shot at Loeb.

Big decision, though, isn't it? Citroen made him, Citroen pays him and Citroen remains his best chance of being a champion.

But Citroen doesn't champion him. Sebastien Ogier is not Citroen. And probably never will be.

It took Loeb seven years of success, 66 wins and a decade of dedication to build that kind of unbreakable bond.

The talk down under was of a straight swap between Hirvonen and Ogier.

Given Ogier's reluctance to shed any light on such a deal, I sought the opinion of the Finn. He promised this was the first he'd heard of it. And he looked entirely genuine. Entirely genuine right up until the point where he did one of those grins.

As the world championship returns north of the equator for the final time this season, it's looking more exciting than ever before. This has already been an absolutely classic season and it's only going to get better between here and Cardiff – on and off the stages.

Quickly dashing back to the top of this tale just to clear something up – I don't want you to get the wrong idea about spiders and me. It's not like I'm scared of them or anything. Absolutely not. It's just that the arachnid was definitely going to eat me.

Met heel wat getier en gevloek denk ik.:laugh: Ik snap de keuze wel van Citroen. Ogier stond al 26 punten achter, en had nu opeens Hirvonen voor zich, die nu opeens weer een bedreiging is voor Loeb. Met nog 2 asfalt rally's voor de boeg zie ik niet heel veel fout gaan voor Loeb. Het kan echter zo zijn dat Ogier Loeb een beetje op gaat fokken en dat hij crasht. Dat risico nemen ze dus niet. Loeb mag.moet die 2 dus winnen van Citroen.
Dan krijg je dus hetzelfde als in de F1 in 2007. Alonso en Hamilton die het hele jaar voorin te vinden zijn en vechtend over de baan gaat en Raikkonen die het in de laatste race nog wegkaapt.

Kevin Abbring wins FIA Institute Young Driver Excellence Academy Award

Rally driver Kevin Abbring has won the Driver of the Academy award following the completion of the FIA Institute Young Driver Excellence Academy for 2011.

The 22-year-old Dutchman, along with the 11 other drivers included in the FIA Institute Academy, completed the final workshop in Austria this week. The award win comes shortly before Abbring's chance with Volkswagen's young driver assessment programme on next month's Rally GB.

Programme manager Robert Reid said: "Kevin has undoubtedly got a huge amount of talent and he has engaged with the Academy programme exceptionally well. From the outset, he took everything in, both from a theoretical and practical perspective. He's going to be a great ambassador both for the FIA Institute and for the Academy itself."

Having spent a giant-killing season in the French Gravel Championship, beating four-wheel drive cars with his Citroen DS3 R3, Abbring will move to a Skoda Fabia S2000 in Wales as part of VW's WRC development programme.

Talking about his year in the Academy, Abbring said: "The FIA Institute Academy really has helped me to develop as a driver. We came here, thinking we could drive and, of course, we could, but there is so much more to the sport before you are able to get to the top. And this is where the Academy helps; it enhances your strong points and enables you to overcome your weak points, allowing you to develop into a complete package."

Next year's Academy will increase its intake from 12 to 30 drivers.

KEVING ABBRING VAN VOLKSWAGEN MOTORSPORT SENSATIONEEL SNEL IN RALLY GREAT BRITAIN

Leusden, 10 november 2011 – Na afloop van tweede klassementsproef van de WK Rally Great Britain keek menigeen vol verbazing naar de lijst met gerealiseerde tijden van de deelnemers. Op plaats zes stonden de namen van de Nederlands-Belgische equipe Kevin Abbring-Lara Vanneste in de Skoda S2000 van Volkswagen Motorsport uit Duitsland. Het Nederlandse rallytalent had een huzarenstukje volbracht door met zijn S2000 auto, waarmee hij nog nauwelijks had gereden, het merendeel van de krachtiger WRC-auto’s achter zich te laten. Waaronder voormalig Formule I coureur Kimi Räikkönen en de Amerikaanse superster Ken Block, bekend van de spectaculaire Gymkhana internetvideo’s.

Op de eerste dag van de Wales Rally Great Britain werden slechts 25,25 wedstrijdkilometers gereden, maar de actie was er niet minder om. Tweemaal over de spekgladde Great Orme proeven in de omgeving van Llandudno, geflankeerd door rotsachtige hellingen aan de ene kant en steile afgronden naar de zee aan de andere kant, en een verraderlijke proef in het bos leverden een eerste indicatie op van het wedstrijdverloop.

Na de eerste dag staat de Nederlandse rallyrijder Kevin Abbring op een uitstekende 17e plaats in het algemeen klassement. Dag 1 was voor Abbring prima van start gegaan met een 18e plaats, een uitstekende prestatie omdat de Nederlander nog nooit een rally had gereden in de Skoda en ook de rally voor hem helemaal nieuw was. Maar zijn ‘moment of glory’ moest nog komen en dat gebeurde op de tweede klassementsproef. “Ik zat goed in mijn vel en de auto was uitstekend in balans. Ik had niet het idee dat ik extreem snel ging en later realiseerde ik mij pas dat we met een 6e plaats in een S2000 auto tussen al die WRC-kanonnen best wel een opmerkelijke prestatie hadden neergezet. De derde proef was moeilijk door het slechte zicht omdat de duisternis was ingevallen. Met de Xenon lampen aan zag je door de mist weinig en met de lampen uit nog minder,” zei Abbring aan de finish. “De proeven zijn voor iedereen nieuw en dus is de strijd gelijk. Dan is het leuk om te merken dat je voorin rijdt.”

De dag van morgen. De klassementsproeven van vrijdag worden verreden in de bossen van Dyfi en Dyfnant. Ze zijn sinds 1996 en 1997 als klassementsproef niet meer gebruikt, dus zijn de condities voor nagenoeg alle deelnemers helemaal gelijk. Kevin en Lara zijn er klaar voor!

terecht. Had het zo onverdiend gevonden als Hirvonen kampioen was geworden. Hoe vaak Latvala daarvoor is geëindigd, maar expres een straf opliep zodat Hirvonen door kon gaan voor het kampioenschap is volgens mij niet meer op 1 hand te tellen. Loeb heeft er dit jaar 5 gewonnen, Ogier ook 5, en Hirvonen 2.

Hirvonen is vaak achter de Citroëns geëindigd, maar heeft veel punten gepakt op de powerstages. Wel constant gereden, maar teveel hulp en trucjes imo.

Bij een ernstig ongeval tijdens de Rally van de Condroz in Waals België zijn twee doden en ook minstens drie gewonden gevallen. De tragische crash gebeurde net voor 18 uur tijdens de special tussen Nandrin en Villers-le-Temple.
De Mitsubishi Lancer Evo10 van de Nederlander Erik Moree ging in een bocht van de weg, ramde een zitbank en die werd in het publiek gekatapulteerd. Op die zitbank zaten vier personen.

Voor twee slachtoffers, een 26-jarige vrouw en een man van 50, kon geen hulp meer baten. De twee anderen, de moeder en de zus van de jonge vrouw, werden gewond, een van hen zelfs ernstig. Dat meldt de brandweer van Hoei.

Het is het eerste zware ongeval in de Rally van de Condroz sinds 2003. Toen viel er een dode te betreuren. De zevende rit werd meteen geannuleerd en even later werd ook beslist de hele rally stop te zetten.

Opvallend: net voor de start van deze special hadden de organisatoren van deze slotmanche van het BK beslist om de start uit te stellen omdat er toeschouwers op het parcours waren gesignaleerd en de veiligheid niet verzekerd was. Even later werd de fatale etappe wel op gang geschoten.

Familiedrama
De jonge vrouw die omkwam is afkomstig van de streek. Haar rally-uitstap veranderde in de ware nachtmerrie. Samen met haar moeder en zus zat ze op de bank die geramd werd door de Nederlander Moree. Zij overleefde de crash niet, haar moeder en zus werden (zwaar)gewond.

Co-pilote kwartier vast
Het dodelijke ongeval zal zeker het debat over de veiligheid van de toeschouwers tijdens een rally weer doen oplaaien, temeer omdat er vanmorgen bij de rally ook al een ander ongeval was gebeurd. Nicolas Declercq verloor de controle over zijn wagen en knalde staalhard tegen een paal, die brak door de impact.

Bij dit incident liep het goed af, al zat de co-pilote meer dan een kwartier gekneld in de wagen en moest ze bevrijd worden door de brandweer.

Doden in de racesport
De racesport kende de afgelopen weken al twee drama's met dodelijke afloop. Op 16 oktober overleed de Britse IndyCar-coureur Dan Wheldon na een enorme crash in Las Vegas. Een week later vond MotoGP-racer Marco Simoncelli de dood tijdens de Grand Prix van Maleisië.

Wie verzint dat verhaal eigenlijk. 4 mensen die op een zitbank zaten terwijl die weg gekatapulteerd werd :rolleyes: Als er geen doden waren gevallen had ik erom gelachen, maar als journalist check je toch wat je schrijft.

Op het nieuws zag je wel dat het publiek soms op erg gevaarlijke plaatsen stond. Loix stak er zijn middelvinger naar op en is in 1 bocht zelfs gestopt om het publiek te gaan vertellen dat ze op een levensgevaarlijke plek stonden (buitenkant bocht).

Deze personen stonden niet in een verboden zone, maar volgens mij toch wel dichter bij de weg dan de minimale 10 meter.

Mikko Hirvonen replaces Sebastien Ogier at Citroen

Mikko Hirvonen will join long-time championship rival Sebastian Loeb at the Citroen team next year, it was confirmed on Wednesday.

The 31-year-old Finn had been competing with Ford in the World Rally Championship since the 2003 season, having scored 14 wins in total.

Hirvonen has finished runner-up to Loeb in the championship three times over the past four years.

The Finn will replace Sebastien Ogier at Citroen, the Frenchman expected to be confirmed at Ford.

"Initially contracted until December 2013, Citroen Racing has finally decided to finish their collaboration with Sebastien Ogier and Julien Ingrassia at the end of the 2011 season," Citroen said in a statement.

The French car maker said Hirvonen has signed a two-year deal until the end of 2013.

"Seeing Sebastien Ogier and Julien Ingrassia leave strikes a particular emotional chord in the whole team," said Citroen team principal Olivier Quesnel.

"Citroen Racing trained them, first of all in the JWRC and then in the Citroen Junior Team and the Citroen Total World Rally Team.

"They had a very good season with five victories and third place in the Drivers' World Championship, and they made a productive contribution to the conquest of the manufacturers' title alongside Sebastien Loeb and Daniel Elena who have claimed their eighth consecutive world crown, a unique achievement in motorsport.

"Now, we're very happy to welcome Mikko Hirvonen and Jarmo Lehtinen. They've been our toughest rivals over the last four seasons and we're really looking forward to our future collaboration. Sebastien Ogier will be a Volkswagen driver when the German manufacturer makes its World Rally Championship debut in 2013.

The 27-year-old from France (above right), who severed his ties with Citroen last week, will spend next season developing the firm’s Polo R WRC alongside co-driver Julien Ingrassia (left) after a signing a long-term contract.

“Volkswagen is the number one in Europe and will soon be number one in the world,” said Ogier. “I’m sure that they’re going to compete with the goal of clinching the WRC title. And I’m happy to be part of this from the outset.”

“I am very happy about Sebastian Ogier and Julien Ingrassia joining us,” said Dr Ulrich Hackenberg, member of the Volkswagen Brand Board of Management for the Development Division. “Both of them are important pieces of the puzzle on our way towards building a successful team in the World Rally Championship. It is also a mark of confidence for our team if such a strong pairing opts for a new team in the WRC that is still in the process of being developed.”

Volkwagen Motorsport boss Kris Nissen addd: “We are proud that such a successful and quick duo as Sebastian and Julien have decided to join Volkswagen. The aim of putting a competitive Polo R WRC on the road for them as quickly as possible will additionally drive our team. We look forward to working with them and are hoping for many victories and titles in the future.”

Ogier will perform his first public duty as a Volkswagen driver when he takes part in the Race of Champions event in Dusseldorf from 3/4 December.

Petter Solberg will drive for Ford in next year's World Rally Championship, following a test for the manufacturer this week.

The 37-year-old Norwegian, who won the 2003 world title with Subaru, has run his own team for the past three seasons, competing in Citroen machinery during that time.

His one-year deal to replace Citroen-bound Mikko Hirvonen as Jari-Matti Latvala's team-mate means that he will drive Ford machinery in the WRC for the first time since Rally Finland in 2000. He will be co-driven by Chris Patterson.

Ford of Europe's senior manager for motorsport, Gerard Quinn, said: "The addition of Petter Solberg to the team brings one of the sport's most experienced and flamboyant drivers back to the team where he started his top-level career.

"A drivers' world title and 13 world rally victories are testament to his abilities and his vast experience will be a great asset to our line-up."

Van onze Telesportredactie - Rallycoureur Kevin Abbring verschijnt volgende maand aan de start van de Rally van Monte Carlo (17 t/m 22 januari) voor het team van Volkswagen Motorsport. De andere auto wordt bestuurd door de Franse rallyvedette Sébastien Ogier.

Abbring maakte onlangs veel indruk tijdens zijn testoptreden in de Rally van Groot-Brittannië in Wales. Met zijn sportieve promotie lijkt Abbring weer een stap dichter bij een plek in het WK-rallyteam van Volkswagen. Volkswagen Motorsport debuteert in 2013 in het WRC met de Polo R WRC.

After 104 rounds of the World Rally Championship and eight years in a Ford, Mikko Hirvonen drives a Citroen this season. Now allowed to talk about his move, he shares his thoughts on the year ahead with AUTOSPORT

This feels weird, really weird. Whose legs are those? They're red! After all those years sitting in blue and white overalls in a rally car, my first test with Citroen felt strange. It felt like I was spying or something like that…

But there I was sitting at the start of my first test in a Citroen DS3 WRC. It was so exciting. I guess a few of you are wondering how I got to be here?

Well, many things made me think of going to Citroen. My contract was ending with Ford. And Malcolm [Wilson, Ford team principal] and Ford were talking about their contract and it was taking a long time to get that side of things sorted. We were talking to everybody else.

I always thought it would be really nice to drive for Citroen. After we had been competing against them for so long, I thought it would be good to see how it works and to see what kind of car the DS3 is. We had the opportunity to go to Citroen. It wasn't an easy choice at all, but then again sometimes it's good to do something different.

During the negotiations, I didn't speak to Sebastien [Loeb] really about anything. The whole thing was kept so quiet and away from the media. But, once we had sorted things out, he has really welcomed me a lot. I only saw him briefly during one of the tests, but we get on really well and he has spent some time trying to explain the car to me. He's already helped me a lot.

But I came here to drive the car and I have done that now. Twice. I tested on gravel and asphalt already. I drove for quite a lot of kilometres on both the tests, I was really keen to get in the car and just drive all of the time. I haven't got into doing any set-up changes or anything like that yet, I haven't tried to do anything like the development on the car – I just wanted to drive and to feel the car.

Honestly, I wasn't expecting the car to be too different. When you look at the results against the Ford last year you can't expect that. It wasn't like I thought I would get in the DS3 and expect to be half a second faster to the first corner. The cars are very close. But it was very interesting the way the cars are working differently; Citroen and Ford have a completely different idea to build a rally car. It's going to take some time to get used to, but it's been a really nice surprise for me the way I have fitted in so far and the way the car and team has worked with me.

One of the biggest surprises to me came on the test and the way the teams work. Of course, both teams work really hard and Citroen has already welcomed me really well. I thought it would be quite difficult because I don't speak any French and I didn't know how much English they spoke, but it's been really, really nice – everybody is trying.

One of the things which is different is the way they work as a team, you know they are working at such a high level with such great expectations, but then at lunchtime they stop working and they have the meal as a team with the red wine and they take a break before we start driving again. The different way of working has been a surprise for me.

I can see why they take a break: the food is pretty good. I have spent a lot of years with Mick the [Ford] chef, though. I'm maybe going to miss Mick's egg and bacon in the morning, but I'm sure I'll get used to it. I am going to try to learn French. I think French is a difficult language to learn. Italian or Spanish might have been easier, but I'm going to give it a try.

It's helping with the mechanics: all of the time I'm asking them what is the name of these parts in French and they have been asking what is this called in Finnish. I'll try, but I can't promise being able to hold a conversation by the end of Monte Carlo! Having said that, my French is already ten times better than it was a month ago. Ca va? See, you are picking something up all of the time.

For now, though, I can't wait to get into the rallies and get started with competing. Everybody knows about Citroen, the results and what the team is capable of. I'm part of that now and I'm really excited about the future.

In the immediate future, it's a pretty good situation that, in a way, I can be a little bit more in the background and get started with the new team. I can get to know the car and build up my speed that way. Nobody is saying for me to go slow, I think I can still go pretty fast – and I'm going to have to fight with Jari-Matti [Latvala] and Petter [Solberg], so we can push hard and find the limit. But, I will support the team and fight for the manufacturers' championship – this doesn't mean I can't win any rallies, if that situation comes it's possible as well.

I want to learn and take it from there.

There's no doubt it's going to be very strange competing against Ford for the first time. Really strange. I have so many fantastic memories of that team. A couple of those memories are from when we won the [manufacturers' World Rally Championship] titles [in 2006 and 2007]. It was great to be part of that, but the best memories are, for me, the people. I have so many friends with the people over there. In many ways, what we did while we were there didn't seem so much like hard work, it was just always having a good time with the boys.

We were really close together and we achieved lots of good results on some nice rallies. When I left M-Sport for the last time, just before Christmas, it was emotional. Malcolm [Wilson, team principal] and Christian [Loriaux, technical director] both wished me good luck and success – but not too much good luck or success!

Timing system dispute fear for Monte Carlo Rally

Further concerns have been cast over the World Rally Championship and next week's opening round, after it emerged that essential timing and tracking equipment might not be available for use on the Monte Carlo Rally.

Stage One Technology, the firm which provides timing and tracking systems, has sent the hardware to Valence for the start of the event. But it has subsequently been contacted by North One Sport's legal team in an effort to stop the kit being used due to an ongoing legal battle between the two.

S1T is owed close to £1m by NOS, but the former's managing director Simon de Banke has written to NOS pledging to pay £10,000 for the equipment and to turn his firm into a 100 per cent non-profit organisation with all proceeds of its activities going to the Make A Wish Foundation.

In the letter, de Banke said: "As you know, Stage One Technology is owed a substantial sum of money by North One Sport which has put the jobs of the passionate S1T team, and those of its suppliers on the line. When it became clear that it was unlikely we would be able to be paid, we gave you notice that we would seize the timing and tracking systems in order to at least allow us the opportunity to continue to trade should the worst happen and you were unable to find a firm offer to buy NOS before time ran out.

"Stage One Technology is a small, independent company which employs a team of people - most of which have worked on the WRC systems for most of its 10-year history - who don't care about the politics or the commercials.

"The systems are valueless to you. There is only one team of people in the world who knows how to turn them on! Only two human beings alive who know how to repair them when they go wrong. These people are part of our team."

De Banke went on to insist that the financial wrangling between the two parties is of little interest to him.

"Whilst I will fight to the death to protect my amazing, humble, diligent, professional and hard working people, I do not care to personally profit from this disappointing situation," he said.

"So without prejudice to our current position that we are the party with the best claim to the equipment, I make NOS the following proposal. If by 1pm today (10 January 2012), you write to confirm you will not seek to assert any right, title or interest over these (valueless to you/the creditors of NOS) systems, and that you will not seek any kind of damages against Stage One Technology or its associated companies, staff or directors relating to their continued use and possession of the equipment, I pledge to turn Stage One Technology into a 100 per cent non-profit organisation, which will put absolutely every penny of its profits into worthwhile causes, such as the incredible Make A Wish foundation, to give kids whose daily routine make everything we're dealing with now seem like a weekend in the Bahamas."

NOS was unable to comment on the situation or on the potential for S1T to use the equipment next week, due to its ongoing legal position.

While S1T has provided the World Rally Championship with its tracking and timing equipment for a decade, the Monte Carlo Rally has run with its own systems for the last three years while part of the Intercontinental Rally Challenge. It is understood those same systems are now on standby for next week.

Ik vond persoonlijk het WRC erg slecht op MotorsTV, volg het niet meer sinds het daar op te zien is. Te veel niets zeggende lange onboard beelden (omdat het beeld erg slecht was, webcam kwaliteit) en amper beelden van camera's langs de weg. Ook werden hele stages over geslagen en was de ranking dus ineens helemaal anders zonder dat je wist hoe dit kwam.

Het half uurtje per dag op Eurosport vroeger was meestal veel beter, dus ik ben erg blij dat Eurosport het nu overneemt. Het IRC deden ze al en dat was vorig jaar subliem met bijna elke stage live van de Monte Carlo rally. En het zal waarschijnlijk dus ook in HD zijn.

Klopt, ik ben ook heel blij dat ik het heb. Sommige uitzendingen zijn trouwens wel in goede kwaliteit. V8 Supercars en RallyCross bijvoorbeeld.

Helemaal met jullie eens hoor. Toen ik nog studeerde en m'n ouders zo'n abonnement hadden keek ik dagelijks. Zeker de diverse tourwagen klasses vind ik gaaf om te kijken. Alleen nu met samenwonen/werken etc komt het er toch niet van om er naar te kijken helaas...

Kevin makes difficult choice for the next stretch in his rally career

After winning the French 2wd Gravel championship title last year as well as two S2000 class wins in the Rally GB and Rally the Monte Carlo, Kevin Abbring (23) and codriver Lara Vanneste (21) will not continue as a team. Frederic Miclotte from Belgium will take over.
Of course this was a difficult but important decision for Kevin Abbring. “ This point in my career is probably one of the most important! “ Although VW chose me for their Junior program I do not have huge WRC experience if you compare to some other youngsters, so there is not a lot of time to adjust. “

Together with Lara they were the youngest team in the WRC in Rally GB and Monte Carlo, with which they earned a lot of respect. So why this choice? “Despite her young age Lara was already used to rallying. She started her first rally some years ago in a Corolla WRC. She proved her skills with Dominique Bruyneel and Pieter Tsjoen which are good references”. Kevin was surprised how quickly she adapted when they did their first rally together in Holland end 2010. Inside the car she is really good, if you imagine to get into a works team this year so quickly you have to be able to adapt very fast and she did. I really thank her for the effort and dedication she showed over the last year and I am shure she will be very successful in the future.

Not many chances like this will probably follow, so to make the best out of it, everything has to be as good as possible, together with someone who can coach me. This is only possible by means of experience, if you take notice of the available time we have. That is why I chose to team up with Frederic Miclotte”.

This weekend Kevin and Frederic will be in the Nordics to do the recce of Rally Sweden which is a good opportunity to get used to each other. After that Rally Mexico will be their first outing together in the rally car.

Erg jammer voor Lara, ze waren een goed duo. Ik hoop echt dat deze keuze goed uitpakt voor Kevin. Uit het (nederlandse) pers bericht komt toch wel een beetje naar voren dat VW hier misschien ook wat mee te maken heeft gehad.

WRC event organisers told to finalise their own TV deals after Eurosport talks break down

World Rally Championship Commission president Jarmo Mahonen has told individual event organisers they will have to finalise their own television deals, AUTOSPORT has learned, a situation labeled totally impractical by one senior team chief.

The letter states that after being unable to conclude the agreement with Eurosport, there is no alternative to locally-sourced footage.

"Despite very lengthy negotiations with Eurosport," the letter, a copy of which was seen by AUTOSPORT, states, "we sincerely regret to have to inform you that, unfortunately, it has not been possible to conclude an agreement even when trying to give them the possibility to act as a provider of services, providing television coverage of the WRC.

"Therefore, the FIA will not be able to put in place a global promoter, or even global television coverage at this time. As a result, each WRC organiser will unfortunately have to negotiate the television broadcasting of his event."

While the television will be sorted on a local level, the letter confirms the commitment to sourcing a new global promoter.

The letter continued: "The FIA will also maintain the link between the organisers and the partners of the WRC, while setting place a plan of action to determine the best way of ensuring the promotion of the championship as soon as this can be secured."

Ford's director of motorsport Gerard Quinn said: "[Events souring their own television agreements] would be totally impractical. As a long-term solution that would not give the manufacturers, the participants, the organisers or the fans or anybody in the sport what we want."

Another team insider added: "This sends us back to the dark ages. How can the FIA ever think this is going to work?"

Eurosport zond het niet meer uit omdat ze het niet meer filmden (staat uitgelegd in dat groot artikel dat Captain Slow plaatste). Het Zweedse Filmworks heeft de Rally afgelopen weekend in beeld gebracht, en enkel zenders die de WRC uitzendrechten hebben zonden dat uit (Eurosport heeft die niet). Spijtig dat het nu niet meer in HD te zien is, enkel op MotorsTV. Maar gelukkig wel met goed commentaar.

MotorsTV heeft de tv rechten voor dit jaar, dus je kan er wel vanuit gaan dat ze het blijven uitzenden ongeacht wie de promoter word.

South Africa closing on slot on 2013 World Rally Championship calendarBy David Evans Thursday, May 3rd 2012, 17:03 GMT




South Africa is believed to be leading the fight for a place on next year's World Rally Championship calendar.

AUTOSPORT understands there will be one slot on the 2013 calendar for a new event, and South Africa and Brazil are vying for that position. South Africa's bid is an event centred in Durban, while there are still three options in Brazil.

"South Africa is looking more and more likely," a source told AUTOSPORT. "The infrastructure is in place, but there are still a few things to get sorted. Brazil, however, has a lot of work to do. We still don't know whether the event will be in Curitiba, Rio [de Janeiro] or Sao Paulo."

Former World Rally champion co-driver and Rally Finland clerk of the course Seppo Harjanne has worked on the route for the South African event.

WRC manager Michele Mouton was in Brazil this week to consider the potential for the nation's first WRC round since 1982, a rally the French lady won in her Audi Quattro.

Rally Argentina clerk of the course David Eli has also been in contact with his fellow South Americans and says he is prepared to help.

"I think it would be good to have another event in this part of the world," he said. "And, if the Rio de Janeiro event is the one which comes, then we will be helping them. The one thing we are not interested in is a rotation programme with them, we want Rally Argentina on the calendar every year."

The 2013 calendar will be discussed at the WRC Commission meeting on May 9, with the schedule ratified by the World Motor Sport Council next month.
